House Oversight Committee Investigates DOT’s Response to Safety Failures

The committee requested internal communications surrounding railroad and flight safety issues.

Members of the majority in the House Oversight Committee recently wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, announcing their investigation into the Department of Transportation’s safety response procedures.

Rail safety and flight safety failures have been on the rise in the last two years. The Transportation Department is currently investigating seven instances that occurred in the last year in which airplanes were prevented from crashing into each other at the last minute. The worst occurrence was a freight train, owned by Norfolk Southern, that crashed in February, near the Ohio community of East Palestine, which resulted in immense amounts of hazardous materials polluting the environment.

“These safety failures have eroded the public’s confidence in air and rail safety and necessitates thorough investigation,” the legislators wrote in the letter. They also said they were seeking “a briefing, documents, and communications related to the department’s efforts to investigate and remediate these issues to protect the safety of all Americans.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chairman James Comer to seek God’s guidance as he heads the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
  • For committee members as they request information from the transportation secretary.
  • For Secretary Buttigieg and Transportation Department officials as they address rail and air safety issues.
